Watching the World

Mum grew up in Sydney during the 1960s and 70s. She is the eldest of five children and as we sit around the dinner table, she tells me that she “can’t remember ever not having a TV. I remember when we got a colour one – ready for the 1976 Olympics, but we always had the black and white TV.” In Mum’s household, watching television was something usually done with the family – there were particular shows that everyone would watch together. I ask her how they decided which show to watch, and she laughs – “It was a very democratic process, as long as we were watching what Pa wanted to watch.” Sport always took precedence, and if there was a choice between two movies her parents would decide which one was most appropriate for the whole family.
